“You sure this ticket gets me in?” I asked Liv. She primped a little more by using her visor mirror.

Driving cautiously, we watched the icy terrain get covered in more snow. We both knew this would be my first time in a blizzard, but that just gave me more of a rush.

The unknown always heightened my enjoyment.

“Why would it be under my door if it didn’t?” She puckered her lips to apply more lip gloss.

If only I could shake this bad feeling. Maybe then I’d feel like I belong. Something wriggled in the back of my brain to warn me. Still, the excitement of the race caught most of my attention.

Pulling up, I found the black Camaro. Now my squeamish senses made sense. Whoever this guy was, my dragon didn’t feel comfortable around him.

Instead of hiding in his car, the pale man got out and mingled with our peers. The bunnies of racing all gathered around him and fawned. Some squealed like they were meeting a prince.

“Why are you watching him?” Liv bumped my shoulder. I had been idling in place for too long with my eyes on a certain guy. A man who set off my red flags.

“Something about him…” I couldn’t choose the right words.

“Is fucking hot!” Liv jousted.

“No… Well, yes, but not what I mean,” I sighed. “Something about him makes my dragon restless and uneasy.”

“Ah, I can see that. He’s super hot, but something makes me want to keep my distance too.”

I watched the man with almost sliver hair and milky skin smile at a few people. He never talked. No, it almost seemed like he had to force himself to be around that many people. Guarded and jaded, this man didn’t like the attention.

The Hellhound Alpha acted the same. After years of captivity and being used as a weapon, Tyr couldn’t be around too many people. He grew as a man and leader, thanks to my dad and Daddy Lo, but he also preferred solitude.

This man differed from the Alpha because he willingly let the massive audience crowd him. Girls pressed against his side like he was a giant magnet, and they were metal.

“Think there’s a stick up his ass? Look how stiff he is.” Liv tipped her head his away. She must’ve noticed what I did. “Say, isn’t he the one who beat you last time?”

I gritted my teeth. Of course, she’d comprehend that right before I had to race him again.

Out of my element, icy tracks had always been my weakness when it came to racing. Give me a cliffside with loose gravel, I got it. Ice? Not so much.

“Can we not talk about that?” I blew out my frustration.

“You got this, Rae-Rae. You might not think so with your past on ice, but you do.” She nudged my shoulder.

“Yeah? What about Derrick?” I teased.

She blushed but smiled. “He’s got something else.”

As we sat in my car, neither of us wanted to get out until we had to. I might’ve gotten an invite, but it didn’t mean I’d be ready for the sexism of racing.
